The Police Dog Grant Program is one of several AFF programs featuring sheltered and rescued “pit bull” dogs in roles that help people and communities.
We partner with Universal K9 and Austin Pets Alive! to make this a reality. As part of the program, Universal K9 trains rescued and sheltered “pit bull” dogs as detection dogs for police and sheriff departments across the country. To make the Police Dog Grant Program possible, AFF provides Universal K9 with a sponsorship to cover the cost of handler training, as well as care and housing for the dogs during the 4-8 week training process. Police and sheriff departments receive the trained detection dogs at no cost.
Using sheltered and rescued “pit bull” dogs for detection work, which is traditionally reserved for purpose-bred dogs, saves money and lives.
